Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) would turn 89 today. She’s remembered for many things – her walk, her voice, her luminous face, her famous lovers. Less known is how she helped another luminary, jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, land a career-making gig back in 1954. We love the story.
Here’s how Ella tells it.
Ella: “I owe Marilyn Monroe a real debt … she personally called the owner of the Mocambo, and told him she wanted me booked immediately, and if he would do it, she would take a front table every night… The owner said yes, and Marilyn was there, front table, every night. The press went overboard. After that, I never had to play a small jazz club again. She was an unusual woman – a little ahead of her times. And she didn’t know it."
Bold enough to take a stand to help another talented woman shine her light – we admire that. Happy birthday, Marilyn. You’re a true luminary – radiant inside and out.
