"One day, if you’re really lucky, you’ll get to be older"
Ita Buttrose broke taboos at Cleo with frank discussion of sex, sealed sections and the first *gasp* nude male centrefolds. (Weren’t around then? Check this out. You’ll laugh.) Now she’s vowed to defeat ageist attitudes. If anyone can, Ita can.
She blazed a trail for Australian women, showing what was possible with hard work and smarts in a career as long as it’s awesome.
A copy girl at 15, she was founding editor of Cleo by 31 and went on to lead at Australia’s most influential publications, including the Australian Women’s Weekly and News Limited.
In her 70s now, she juggles tireless commitment to Alzheimer’s Australia and other causes with life as a TV host. In 2013, she was named Australian of the Year.
Ita, we salute you. You’re every inch an icona luminary. We can’t wait to see what you do next.
